For some women, hair removal begins and ends with their underarms, lower legs and bikini line during the summer months. But for others, there’s an almost bewildering amount of tweezing, waxing, epilating and shaving to be done to avoid having hair in embarrassing spots. As many as 40% of women grow some kind of facial hair, and there are a number of conditions which can cause an increase in dark, terminal hairs all over the body – highly embarrassing for many ladies.
If you’ve noticed an increase in hair growth on your face or body, here are some of the reasons why this may have occurred.
Some ladies with Middle Eastern, South Asian or European ancestry are prone to growing more facial hair than others. This is all down to genetics, and unfortunately, isn’t something that can be altered, meaning many women will resort to permanent hair removal as a solution.
The change in hormones around the time of the menopause can have a big impact on hair growth, especially in the facial area. Many women who previously had nothing but ‘peach fuzz’ on their faces reach the menopause and find dark, wiry hairs on their chin, jawline and upper lip.
For younger ladies struggling with excess body hair, one of the main causes is PCOS, or polycystic ovarian syndrome. Many doctors still struggle to understand the underlying causes of this condition, and there’s no known cure. It’s thought that the condition causes the female body to produce more androgens (male sex hormones), which can lead to more body hair, as well as acne, head hair loss and even infertility in serious cases.
For those who take anabolic steroids, one of the most common side-effects is an increase in body hair. These medications are often used by people who want to improve their physique and build muscle very quickly.
Laser hair removal is one of the only permanent methods of hair removal available to women suffering from an excess of facial or body hair. Though it’s more expensive than many other hair removal treatments, it can save women thousands of pounds over the course of their life – money which would have been spent on removal creams, disposable razors, epilation and other hair removal methods.
Laser hair removal uses heat to destroy hair follicles without damaging the surrounding skin. Each time the hair grows back after laser hair removal, it will be slightly weaker and lighter, until the follicle shuts down entirely. It takes around 6 sessions (spaced between 2-6 weeks apart, depending on the area being targeted) for ladies to see an 80% reduction in hair within the chosen area.
