The Importance of Vitamin D For Great Skin

We all know that vitamins and minerals play a key role in the health of our skin – but one vitamin in particular has developed a reputation as a skincare saviour.

Vitamin D is known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’, because our body synthesises it when the skin is exposed to the sun. It’s primarily known for its ability to strengthen bones, but it has a multitude of other benefits, including reducing inflammation. This can be a key facet in improving the condition of your skin – conditions such as acne, rosacea and eczema are all linked with inflammation, and vitamin D has been proven to help combat these issues effectively.

Here are just a few of the skincare-related benefits of vitamin D:

  • As mentioned, vitamin D is an anti-inflammatory, which can help reduce instances of acne.
  • Vitamin D is also a mood-booster. It’s said to help those suffering from stress and anxiety, which can have a knock-on effect on the skin. The less stressed you are, the less likely you are to ‘break out’ or experience problem skin.
  • The ‘sunshine vitamin’ can also help to control your insulin response. For women who suffer from conditions like PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and diabetes, this can also play a key role in managing acne.
  • Vitamin D can help boost the immune system, which can help your skin heal after being injured.

Are you getting enough vitamin D?

Vitamin D is unique in that we must expose our skin to the sun in order to ensure we’re getting enough of it. There are certain vitamin D-enriched foods, and foods where small amounts of vitamin D occur naturally, but the sun is the overwhelming provider of this vital nutrient. There’s just one problem for Brits, especially during winter: most of us haven’t seen enough sun in weeks!

Throughout the winter months, it’s much harder for people in the UK to get the appropriate amount of vitamin D. Many people arrive at work before the sun comes up, and by the time they’re leaving the office, the sun is going down again. There’s also a huge number of cloudy, overcast days, where the sun’s rays and all the vitamin goodness they provide, are blocked.

For those who struggle with poor skin, this can present a real problem. Here are a few tips for getting some extra vitamin D during the winter.

  • If it’s a relatively sunny day, try to go outside on your lunch break – just 20 mins of forearm exposure can provide your recommended vitamin D intake for the entire day.
  • If you have darker skin, the vitamin D will not be metabolised as efficiently – you may need to stay outside for slightly longer in order to obtain the right amount.
  • Foods containing small amounts of vitamin D include mushrooms, oily fish, dairy products (milk, eggs, etc.) and cod liver oil.
  • If all else fails, introduce a vitamin D supplement into your morning routine. These come in a variety of forms, from liquid sprays to simple capsules.
