If you suffer from problem skin, or you’re currently looking for ways to refresh and rejuvenate your face, you’ve probably come across the term ‘micro needling’. This fairly new treatment is an exciting addition to our services at Brixworth Laser & Skincare – but how exactly does the treatment work, and what are the benefits?
Micro needling, as the name suggests, is a treatment which uses tiny needles to create minuscule punctures in the skin. This stimulation helps to trigger the body’s healing responses, causing it to produce an increased amount of collagen and elastin – those crucial factors in fresh, youthful skin.
There are two types of micro needling treatment – one uses a Dermaroller, the other uses a Dermapen. A Dermaroller is a device made from titanium, which is gently rolled over the skin to create those tiny punctures. This sparks the healing process, causing instantly plumped, smooth-looking skin. The Dermapen is an electronic device which gives the practitioner greater control over the treatment intensity, which allows them to treat conditions such as acne, scarring, rosacea, hyperpigmentation and more. At Brixworth Laser & Skincare we only use Dermapen.
As mentioned, the key benefit of micro needling is that it helps to trigger the skin’s regeneration process. The body creates more vital collagen and new skin cells, which creates a wonderfully youthful look. The treatment is far more natural than many other skincare options – it simply uses an external device to kick-start the body’s own healing mechanisms and responses.
Micro needling is also minimally invasive – which means there’s little to no downtime after each treatment. Many of our own clients pop in during their lunch hour or in the evening, as there’s no need to take time off work like some treatments (facial peels, for example).
As well as its wonderful anti-ageing effects, micro needling can also prove incredibly helpful for those suffering with common skin conditions. Acne sufferers turn to micro needling for a number of reasons, the main one being that the treatment helps to enhance the absorption of other skincare products and treatments. Studies have shown that only 4-8% of skincare products penetrate the skin fully, but micro needling can help increase that figure and give acne creams and topical treatments a better chance to succeed. Acne scarring can also be treated effectively with micro needling
Hyperpigmentation and sun damage can also be addressed with the help of micro needling. The stimulation of collagen growth can help to reverse sun damage and blemishes caused by hyperpigmentation, creating a smoother and more even complexion.
Believe it or not, micro needling can also help to shrink your pores! Many people believe that poking tiny holes in the skin is likely to make their pores even bigger, but micro needling acts the opposite way – by plumping up the skin, pores appear smaller, giving your skin that baby-smooth look you’ve always wanted.
